The Philosophy Foundation is an independent non-profit educational foundation, governed by an elected Board of Trustees, and staffed entirely by student volunteers. The Foundation was established in Boston in 1970 and incorporated in 1976. It has offered classes and weekend retreats to thousands of students in New England.

Groups meet regularly to study and practice Advaita Vedanta. These classes, led by tutors who are themselves experienced students of this tradition, are supplemented by practical exercises, retreats, and initiation into meditation.

Our students share an interest in the practical pursuit of truth, in good company, and in making this work available to all who are interested. Participation in the Philosophy Foundation's programs requires no prior knowledge of any philosophy and is open to people of all ages, races, faiths, and cultures.

Students of the Philosophy Foundation School of Advaita have been inspired by many past and present teachers in the lineage established by Shankara, including Shri Shantananda Saraswati, Shankaracharya of the Jyotir Math, who died in 1997. We are now affiliated with the Sharada Peetham in Sringeri, India, the Southern Seat established in 820 CE by Shankara, and are guided by His Holiness Shri Bharati Tirtha Swamigal.
